Crytek Reveals Arena of Fate

Okay, but where's the casual racism?

MOBAs seem to be the new flavor of the month, near as I can tell.  Whereas the genre used to be mostly limited to DOTA, League of Legends, and maybe Heroes of Newarth, as E-Sports becomes more popular and MOBAs proved to be one of the more viable competitive genres, there has been a similar interest to see more competitors enter the market.  Which is why we have a Lord of the Rings MOBA, a Mythology-based MOBA, Awesomenauts (which can really only be described as Awsomenauts), and  why later well be getting a Magika MOBA, an Orcs Must Die MOBA, a Blizzard MOBA, ect, ect.  Its a popular genre now, and reminds me more than a little bit of the big MMORPG explosion that followed the massive success of World of Warcraft.

Well, another MOBA is trying to wrestle for its place in the spotlight, and you may recognize the names behind it.  Crytek, the team behind Crysis and Far Cry, finally stop naming things with cry in the name and bring us Arena of Fate, which allows you to settle the age-old question: Could Nikola Tesla kick Little Red Riding Hoods butt?

Yeah, thats right.  Basically, Arena of Fates gimmick is that its going to be a clash between famous historical figures (Right now we know of Nikola Tesla and Joan of Arc) and fictional characters from myth and legend (of which we know about Little Red Riding Hood, Fenrir, and Robin Hood).  Its also going to shake things up, as I understand from the announcement website, that instead of having one objective that your 5-man team will all be working together to accomplish, there are a bunch of smaller objectives scattered about the map that get your team points, and whoever has the most wins.

An interesting twist?  Well, interesting enough to warrant its existence.  Its hard to get a feel for the game with only the announcement website and the trailer alone, but Crytek promised it would have the game available at this years E3, so it would be better to reserve judgment until we can actually get our hands on it.

So what do you guys think?  A lot of people are getting sick of MOBAs (And its hard to blame them), but more competition isnt bad and it might be interesting to see what other historical figures make it into the roster.  Besides, if they can get the history right, it might be a fun educational tool but maybe Im getting ahead of myself.
