It’s not just rumors and lawsuits anymore: The Crytek Crisis has reached critical levels, and just in time for the holidays. The developer has just announced that, amidst cuts and a shrinking budget, they’re closing down five of their studios around the world.
I bet you didn’t even know they HAD five studios, right?
The studios being shut down were located in Hungary, Bulgaria, South Korea, China, and Turkey, which means they only have two studios left standing in Frankfurt, Germany and Kiev, Ukraine. With the closing of the other studios, they say they plan on re-focusing their efforts on their iconic engine, while ensuring a “smooth transition” and to “secure jobs” for those affected by the closing.
Crytek Co-Founder and Managing Director, Avni Yerli, had this to add:
“These changes are part of the essential steps we are taking to ensure Crytek is a healthy and sustainable business moving forward that can continue to attract and nurture our industry’s top talent… Our focus now lies entirely on the core strengths that have always defined Crytek – world-class developers, state-of-the-art technology and innovative game development, and we believe that going through this challenging process will make us a more agile, viable, and attractive studio, primed for future success.”
Nowhere, of course, do they mention the missing paychecks or the dissatisfied employees who have, reportedly, been leaving in droves. Still, we find ourselves with a whole lot of questions following this news: why didn’t they come out with this sooner? Why are they being downsized? Was Ryse really so bad they had to reduce their size by more than 2/3rds? We may never know, unless some high-ranking employee breaks their silence.
In the meantime, though, this is terrible news so close to the holidays. Our well-wishes for those effected, and we hope 2017 proves kinder to them.
