Could the Nintendo Switch be Used for VR?

It may very well be.

Now before I start this off I would like to say that this is all about my personal opinion mixed with some loose facts. The major fact being that Nintendo filed some patents a while back for the Nintendo Switch and one of them pretty clearly shows a VR headset. Prior to seeing this picture, the thought of VR never crossed my mind and now that it has been embedded into my brain there's no way I'll ever get it out. How could I have not thought about that before now?

The portable mode of the Switch would work very well as a VR device. We've seen that the sides of the screen where the thumbsticks are can be removed from the screen itself. How hard would it be to design a VR headset to slide the screen into and start playing? The biggest concern I have with this is the weight of the screen. I would assume that the VR headset would naturally have some weight on it without the Switch being inserted. The Switch isn't that big, but it could still have a decent amount of weight on it and the two combined could be quite heavy, especially for children. Does that mean that the Switch VR would be impractical? Absolutely not.

Nintendo might have thought about everything here. The world has had such a huge obsession with virtual reality lately and Nintendo might be the first company to attack every single problem and take care of it with one console. You want gaming at home? Get the Switch. You want gaming on the go? Get the Switch. You want virtual reality for the games you love to play? Get the Switch. Not to mention the fact that being placed inside of a Zelda game or inside your car in a Mario Kart VR game would be absolutely incredible.

Nintendo has so much that they can do here. They are the last of the big three to release a quality next-gen console. They've had the chance to sit back and observe the successes and failures of Microsoft and Sony, and now they can capitalize on it. I'm hoping that Nintendo really blasts on to the console scene with the Switch and can come back from a horribly disappointing run with the Wii U.
