Command and Conquer Salvaged by Fans

I'd make a C&C pun but I've never played it. Again.

If there’s one thing you can count on, it’s for fans to do amazing things for the games that have entertained and inspired them.

Re-creating Oblivion and Morrowind in the Skyrim engine?  A monumental task, and yet modders are doing it right now out of nothing but love and affection for the previous entries in the Elder Scroll series.  The premiere Superhero MMORPG City of Heroes closes down, so fans open up a kickstarter to make their own game in the spirit of the original.  The things gamers have done on behalf of the games they adore is a long and heartwarming list, and it just got a little bit longer.

You may or may not know—but if you’re on this website, you mostly likely do—that the once dominant host of multiplayer servers, Gamespy, is pretty much officially dead… which means any of the games who had their multiplayer hosted by Gamespy were dragged down with it.  But some were rescued, and among those who were able to stay afloat is the beloved Command and Conquer series.

Their multiplayer was down only for a few hours before Fan efforts managed to re-open them via C&C: Online.   This new service allows players (who sign up) to play Command and Conquer 3, Kane’s Wrath, Red Alert, and Generals, and Generals: Zero Hour multiplayer, effectively saving the heavily-multilayer based games from extinction.

It’s free, but you need to sign up for it and it takes a little bit of navigation to get everything working, but hey: at least the option exists.  Feel free to check out the tutorial video below.  While it’s sad to see Gamespy go, it’s nice to see a community band together to save at least some games from the wreckage.

Now  if only someone could have saved Impossible Creatures...
