Now hold on, I thought Club Penguin closed down nearly two years ago?
It did! The popular browser game Club Penguin shut down in March of 2017. What most people forget is that not long after that, the same team launched Club Penguin Island. This continuation game wasn't as well received as the original, often cited as lacking the charm it once had.
As it turns out, when something is shut down, they less-popular follow-up doesn't last much longer. According to a report by Kotaku, Disney Canada, the Club Penguin home, was informed of the game's closure. This came as a surprise to the staff, who had believed their jobs were secured. An anonymous employee claims that they were greenlit for long-term projects only weeks prior.
The whole studio was basically popping champagne, only to have that pulled out from under us by someone way up the chain at Disney.
A notice has since been posted on the Club Penguin website.
With this, the Club Penguin brand will see its final rest. The chances of a resurrection in any form are extremely unlikely at this point. It was fun while it lasted.
