Pirate is a pretty general term and these days it tends to refer to people who illegally download things on the internet. In the good old days, Pirates used to sail the seven seas in search of treasure, but in this new action MMO, you sail the skies instead. Cloud Pirates is a newly released action MMO in which you control your own airship and take place in fast-paced aerial combat with enemy players and allies.
Players have the ability to customize their ship and even create their own stronghold in the sky. As you progress in the game, you can make your ship more powerful via upgrades and even more menacing via customization options. It's definitely a unique take on the MMO genre, but it's not the first airship shooter game we've seen. Cloud Pirates was released onto Steam early access on March 1st and today, it has been officially released via update 1.4 "Stronghold".
With this release, Cloud Pirates has supposedly gone free-to-play, but they haven't yet updated their steam page, so it's still listed as an early access buy-to-play game. If it does indeed go free-to-play, hopefully, it doesn;t become yet another MMO game plagued by outrageous microtransactions and a disrespectful pay-to-win formula.
Free-to-play games definitely need some skepticism, but with the right developer, they can be great games. Let's hope Cloud Pirates is one of the exceptions. Check it out on here on Steam.
