Cliff Bleszinki's Latest Game is LawBreakers

The title is pretty clever at least.

Former Gears of War designer, Cliff Bleszinki, has fostered a lot of goodwill from fans thanks to his magnum opus Gears of War—evidenced by the fact he’s one of the few designers I can actually call by name and people will recognize, which is still a pretty rare thing to happen in today’s gaming world. Because of his fame and success, he pretty much has had an open check to do what he wanted. And what he wanted, apparently, was Lawbreakers. I’ll let this extremely dull cinematic explain it to you:

So basically, the moon blew up, which somehow destroyed gravity, and because gravity was messed up every criminal organization thought "Now be a great time to join up," they made a big-ass army, and now America has to fight them off with a super-police force. Okay, well… no one played Gears of War for the plot, either, so I guess that’s forgivable.

Gameplay wise, the game has been described as “vertical,” with a heavy emphasis on getting around with jetpacks, grappling hooks, and other crazy mobility tools. The matches will be 5v5, at least for the time being.

It’ll be released for PC sometime in the future, and will be "free to play." If you’re attending PAX next week, they’ll have a playable demo there for you to enjoy.

Gotta say, this looks… well, I can’t say how it looks in earnest, I haven’t seen the gameplay, but based on the boring trailer I gotta say this feels like an anti-climactic return of one of our most iconic developers. A free-to-play FPS for the PC isn’t exactly terribly innovative either, and the focus on mobility just kind of reminds me of Titanfall. If this is just Titanfall with less gravity and robots, that might be good, but… here’s hoping there’s something he’s holding out on us. I guess we'll see on Friday when the gameplay is announced.
