Classic PC Series "Myst" Getting Updates Later This Year

To celebrate 25 years of bending your brain.

While it frequently shows up in “Best of” lists and played a curtail role in the development of PC gaming, it’s not often you find people talking about Myst anymore. That might be because the genre it would go on to launch would become dominated by a largely casual market, the kind of customers who don’t concern themselves with the rest of the gaming industry. So while Myst was important for the industry as a whole, the many ways it reverberated through history were largely enjoyed by people outside our “circle.”

Well, if you happen to have fond memories of the Myst series, or you’re an aforementioned casual who sort of wandered here on accident, I have good news for both of you: Cyan, the studio behind it, has just announced that to celebrate the game’s upcoming 25th anniversary, they’re going to released an “updated” version of the five classic games for Windows 10 sometime in the near future.

"We managed to finally talk to all the right people and departments and put some funding together to try to make it happen. With agreements in place, we’re happy to announce that we’ll be releasing updated (for Windows 10) versions of all the Myst games later this year,"

What does “updated” mean? We’re not sure. Presumably it means they’ll be boosting the graphics, but they did that already with the Masterpiece editions so hopefully there’ll be a bit more to it than just that. A proper release date is also unknown, although the first Myst was released in September so that would be a safe guess to make.

I would never claim to be a fan of the series myself, given that I've never played them, but considering I like the obscure lore of Dark Souls and the puzzle-solving of Professor Layton, I would probably really enjoy them. This might be my shot to do just that.
