Civilization VI has been around for a while now – if you want to feel really old, it was announced about four years ago now – but since Civilization games tend to have a pretty long shelf-life, it shouldn’t be that surprising that the developer, Firaxis, is still making new content for it. But you still might be slightly surprised to hear that four years later the game still qualifies for getting a brand-new season pass, and yet, that’s exactly what happened.
Sitting at around $40 for the whole season pass, the exact content of the pack is still largely a mystery, although new content will be released for it periodically through this year and the next.
In May, they’re releasing a Maya and Gran Columbia pack, which will come with two civilizations, two leaders, an Apocalypse game mode, new city-states, resources, and more. In July, they’re releasing the Ethiopia pack, which comes with one new civilization, one new leader, a secret societies game mode, and new districts and infrastructures. There are four other packs planned after that, each one comes with at least one new civilization, at least one new leader, at least one new game mode, and new content that remains unspecified.
They also plan to release some free content that’ll be available to all players.
This is a pretty dramatic shift away from the way Civilization usually does business, namely, release huge expansions that dramatically changes the way you play the base game. Extra game modes will certainly add some spice to things, and new civilizations will give you new ways to play as well, but for people looking for something a bit more earth-shaking in their expansions, this probably isn’t what you were hoping for.
But if you just wanted to make an already huge game even bigger, well… happy days, I guess.
