Video game films weren't as common as they tend to be lately. Lots of franchises are jumping on board, such as Angry Birds, Assassin's Creed, and World of Warcraft. But two other unexpected franchises are going to be on the silver screen soon enough.
Atari's Missile Command and Centipede. Yes, let that sink in for a moment.
Here is the story of Centipede... or at least the premise:
The player defends the playing field from centipedes, spiders, scorpions, and fleas.
And as for Missile Command? Well, there is a little bit of a plot to it, but only a little. According to Wikipedia:
"The player's six cities are being attacked by an endless hail of ballistic missiles, some of them even splitting like multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs)." The player must protect these cities. The end.
For some reason, I feel that Centipede is going to take the route of Battleship, which was very loosely based off of the board game and didn't do so hot.
Apparently Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films recently closed a deal to partner with Atari to produce and finance these two games. Randall Emmett and George Furla will be produce the films, and Atari, Stephen Belafonte, Wayne Marc Godfrey, and Robert Jones will serve as executive producers.
According to Atari CEO Fred Chesnais, the company was excited to partner with Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films "to develop feature films based on two of our most beloved titles. Centipede and Missile Command are part of Atari's unparalleled and rich library of popular games and we cannot wait to see the movies come to life."
Emmett deemed Centipede and Missile Command "immensely popular titles have been enjoyed by generations of gamers worldwide. We look forward to a very successful partnership and to bringing Centipede and Missile Command to the big screen."
I do not know what to think of this. I don't think these two will do that well, but such is the state of video game to film adaptations.
