Cyberpunk 2077 might be the most quintessential 2020's game ever: delayed for months, and released right at the end of what was the worst year of recent history, people genuinely thought that at least they had this shining city on a hill to look forward to in the waning days of 2020. And then the game finally came out, and it was... complicated.
While just underwhelming if you're playing on high-end PC software, last-gen console players and folks with less than high-end PCs have found the experience extremely buggy and problematic, to the point where both Microsoft and Sony felt obliged to offer special refund policies to people who had ordered the game digitally.
But according to a fascinating new article posted by the New York Times, CD Projekt Red's problems don't end with fixing bugs and addressing concerns of workplace abuse. Apparently, lawyers and investors in Warsaw are currently considering filing a class-action lawsuit against the company in question.
The grounds for such a lawsuit, apparently, are claims that they misrepresented the game in order to get investors to put stock into the title, and then underdelivered when it finally came out. This strikes me as a little goofy, personally. No Man's Sky did more active lying about their games than CD Projekt Red ever did and they didn't get sued. In fact, the worst you could say about CD Projekt Red is that they bought into their own hype and didn't discourage people from getting unreasonably excited about what was presumed to be the best title of the year.
I honestly don't think CD Projekt Red is at risk of being sued -- or if they are, I don't think there's a court that would condemn them for making a poor game -- but it's certainly a fascinating reminder that the bigger they come, indeed, the harder they fall.
