We are officially two weeks away from the start of E3 2014, and things are definitely starting to heat up. Nintendo is already putting on an invitational Super Smash Bros 4 tournament during E3- which will also allow in 3,000 fans to spectate in person. Not to be outdone, Capcom has announced they will be putting on their own Ultra Street Fighter IV invitational tournament, with $3,000 in prize money.
The players invited to this tournament are some Cali's best (and arguably USA's best)- EG|Justin Wong, EG|Ricky Ortiz, EG|PR Balrog, EG|K-Brad, LU|Alex Valle, YBK|Jayce the Ace, as well as two mystery guests being flown in from Japan. If I were to guess... Daigo Umehara and "Muderface" Tokido seem like good choices. Those players also have an advantage of playing USF4 in arcades for over a month now in Japan. USA players will only have one week of experience, when the DLC upgrade for Ultra hits 360 and PS3 this weekend.
There's also quite a bit of buzz indicating there will be some form of fighting game announcement coming from Capcom at E3. When asked on twitter if there would be a new game announcement, Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono responded with a rather troll-ish winky face. A new fighting game is known to be in development, but the company has been tight lipped about what the game is or what platforms it is coming to. Ono could also have been referring to Tekken X Street Fighter, the Namco produced cross over being developed by Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada. Both Ono and Harada did a lot of publicity for the release of Street Fighter X Tekken, so it goes to reason that Ono will be around to support Namco's version. Aside from a few pieces of concept art, Tekken X Street Fighter has never been publicly shown- despite being announced 4 years ago.
This is looking to be a great E3 for fighting game fans. On top of Smash 4, USF 4, possibly TxSF and/or a new Capcom fighter- Ed Boon has been counting down to what appears to be an E3 reveal of Mortal Kombat 10. All this and season 2 of Killer Instinct from Microsoft and Iron Galaxy... looks like fightstick sales on next gen systems are set to go through the roof next year.
