Call of Duty WW2 Is the Best Selling Game of the Year

Of 2017, I should probably specify.

We already reported on how successful Nintendo was during the holiday’s last year, selling over two million units in December alone, but that’s just the hardware side of the story. And all those sexy new consoles aren’t going to do much good under the tree without games to play on them. In that respect, the NPD group just released the game sales numbers for November and December… and the numbers might be upsetting for you purists.

You might be unsurprised to learn that Call of Duty: WW2 topped the charts in November and December; for as much as fans have hated on the series in recent years, it’s still Call of Duty at the end of the day, and returning to World War 2 Europe was enough for players to forgive and forget about the whole “sci-fi” business. They forgave and forgot so hard, in fact, that Call of Duty: WW2 actually became the best-selling game of the whole year, which… well, sucks, because it really didn’t deserve it, but there’s nothing we can really do about that. Call of Duty has secured a spot as both a hardcore and casual must-buy, meaning that around the holiday’s, it’s always going to sell well.

In December, the second-best selling game, kind of surprisingly, was Star Wars Battlefront 2. Now you’d think with all the white-hot gamer rage that surrounded the game, it wouldn’t have done nearly that well, but I’d wager dollars to doughnuts that most of those sales were from parents and other non-gamers who just wanted to get their spawn the latest Star Wars game. Fair enough, I guess, but it is a pity that EA will apparently learn nothing from this debacle.

And with the end of the year, we’re finally able to see what games sold best in 2017 as a whole. You already know #1, now see the rest:
  • Call of Duty: WWII
  • NBA 2K18
  • Destiny 2
  • Madden NFL 18
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Grand Theft Auto V
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  • Star Wars: Battlefront II 2017
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Mario Kart 8
Nothing is terribly surprising about this list, except maybe the fact that GTA V is still selling new copies. It’s also good to see Nintendo back on these top 10’s, as it’s been quite some time since we’ve seen a Nintendo console sell well enough to even be a threat.

Hopefully 2018 gives us even more of a shake-up.
