Last month, we reported on some leaked images that suggested (outright proclaimed) that the next Call of Duty game would take the series back to its roots and be set back in World War 2, because World War 1 has already been done and no one’s ready for a game set in the Mexican-American war. While these images were certainly impressive, nd seemed very authentic, no one over at Activision was spilling the beans. So we were left to wonder…
But then, over the weekend, the truth was unveiled: those images were, in fact, real, and the next Call of Duty game will, in fact, be set in the conflict that shook the entire world.
However, absolutely no other details were revealed: all we got was a countdown to 10am PT on Wednesday, April 26th, where Activison would livestream the worldwide reveal. Fortunately, there’s been another leak since then, and we’ve learned a bit about this upcoming title from that.
The leak, if it can be trusted, suggests a November 2nd, 2017 release date, a single-player game, a “standalone co-op experience” that “unleashes a new and original story”, separate from the main experience. The leak also suggests (and is very easy to believe) that there will be a private beta for people who preordered the game.
I think most people will be more-or-less happy to see Call of Duty stepping away from the modern/futuristic setting it’s been stuck in for the past few years, and… ‘encouraging’ to see that Activision listened, of sorts, when people complained about Infinite Warfare. But for some, it’s too little too late, and it does kind of reek of desperation following the success of Battlefield 1.
Regardless, we’ll have to see if they can get any goodwill back later this week, when the leaks are either confirmed or refuted.
