When I first wrote on Modern Warfare: Infinite Warfare's reveal trailer, I made a passing comment on how the video had racked up an unusual amount of dislikes for the short amount of time it's been out. I didn't take it for much at the time, I admit, there's always going to be some backlash/vitriol when a new game in such a ubiquitous franchise is announced, and it seemed like the kind of thing that would even out as the video stayed in the public eye and more supportive fans got to it.
Well. As it turns out, I may have miscalculated just how much people hate this new Call of Duty game. As Forbes points out, not only has Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare gotten more dislikes since it was first announced, and not only has the number of dislikes over twice as many "likes" as it has received... but the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer is actually the most-disliked video about video games on YouTube. More than anything Pewdiedie has done. More than anything Anita Sarkeesian has done. The 459K and counting dislikes not only ranks this as the most disliked video involving video games on YouTube, it actually marks it as one of the mist disliked videos on YouTube in general, easily putting it in the top 50th spot.
The question is, "Why?"
I'm not sure, to be totally honest. Yeah, the trailer itself wasn't great, but that alone wouldn't be enough to earn this much hate. Plus, it included a remake of the original Modern Warfare (which people LOVED) and that didn't slow down the hate in any meaningful way. The comments included some hints: there were people who were tired of the sci-fi ascetic and wanted to go back to World War 2, there were people comparing it to Halo, the over-reliance on explosive set pieces and less on substantial action...
...Right now, it just seems like fans disagree with the direction the franchise is going. And maybe, in that respect, the trailer for the remaster of the original game did more harm than good: reminding fans what they used to have, and what they miss most.
Since I started writing this, while Infinity Ward has been more or less silent, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg has commented, saying:
"The reveal trailer for Black Ops II, which took the franchise into the future for the first time, had the most dislikes of any reveal trailer we had ever made at that time. And that, of course, went on to become our most successful game ever. And right now, the franchise has never been stronger."
Is there any merit to his claims? Or is it just denial? Hmm... time will tell...
