It actually started very awkwardly. Double Fine founder Tim Schafer set himself up to be interviewed during this year's E3, and he asked an old friend of his, Jack Black, to be the one doing the questioning. Tim Schafer intended it to be an opportunity for two old friends to catch up, while discussing Double Fine's future for interested fans... but since Jack Black also played the main character of Brutal Legend, people reasonably came to the conclusion that this was a set-up to announce a sequel to one of the few genuinely good Double Fine games.
Tim Schafer had to apologize for misleading his audience, but he did say this in regards to a Brutal Legend 2:
"Someday we'll make that game,"
While adding that it would be an expensive undertaking. Brutal Legend was the best-selling game Double Fine ever made, but it was also the most expensive, since a lot of the music used needed to be licensed and many of the voice actors were legends of the rock community. It cost them $25 million to make that game, and with how much more triple-A development costs these days? That's no small investment.
So, sad they had to tease us like that, but there is a glimmer of hope... as soon as they inevitably announce their next Kickstarter, I mean.
