PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds started out as a mod and grew into an incredibly popular game of its own. It turns out Brendan Greene, the creator and PlayerUnknown himself, wants people to mod his game. When speaking to CNET, Greene said that he welcomes mods and hopes that somebody can make another mod that propels them to fame the same way he did.

Greene said that while he definitely wants people to mod PUBG, he needs to be very careful. Even though some people are going to use files to create harmless mods, others can use them to create problems. They are very protective of their server files and do not allow users to host their own servers right now. Any kind of mod would have to go through the game's developer, Bluehole.

Allowing people to run their own dedicated servers would mean releasing the server files and that could lead to piracy. Its something we want to do, but it might take us a bit of time to actually implement it, because we really have to figure out the best way to do it so the game still stays secure.
