I, personally, remain blissfully optimistic about the upcoming Detective Pikachu movie, starring Ryan Reynolds as the aforementioned electric mouse. There’s no denying it’ll probably be awful, but based on the trailers, it will be a spectacular kind of trainwreck, the kind of thing we talk about for years and years. So I’m always on the lookout for new information about the movie, or at least new trailers that show off this weird, mutant vision of the Pokemon universe.
And it seems the marketing team finally figured out what the people really want, because the latest trailer is literally just forty-five seconds or so of the assorted CGI “realistic” pokemon standing around and posing for you. It’s adorable, it’s horrible, and I just can’t get enough of it.
Interestingly, the video was posted by Ryan Reynolds himself, rather than the studio or anything. It’s not terribly surprising, this guy has taken a very, uh, “active” role in promoting this movie ever since we found out he’d be starring in it, but it does add to the charm.
It also includes some clips from the actual movie, most of which we actually hadn’t seen before, which is pretty nice.
Oh, and of course: we also got our first look at “live-action” Magikarp. It’s every bit as miserable as you’d imagine.
The movie comes out May 10.
