Borderlands 3 Breaks a Lot of Records

For both Gearbox and 2K.

It’s not exactly news that Borderlands 3 is doing well. I think we all could have guessed from the start that the latest installment of the Borderlands franchise would be making some fat stacks: heck, it probably wouldn’t be a surprise to hear it’s the most successful game Gearbox ever made, if it ever gets to that point.

But Borderlands 3 is being published by 2K games, a publisher with a lot more than just a few shooters under their belt. And breaking 2K’s records? That, my friends, is almost surprising.

Almost.

2K Games just announced such a thing, as it revealed that within five days of launching, Borderlands 3 sold 50% more than it’s direct predecessor, Borderlands 2, by selling over 5 million copies. Which not only makes it the best-selling game in the franchise, it also makes it the fastest-selling 2K game to date. It also set a record for being the highest-selling 2K game on PC within a five-day window (a very specific accolade), and officially turned Borderlands into a billion-dollar franchise… which means the people at 2K, Gearbox, and of course Epic Games have a whole lot to celebrate.

They also felt compelled to include – perhaps as a nod to the people who derided their decision to make it an Epic Game Store exclusive – that it got the highest percentage of digital sales than any other game they’ve put out, with 70% of sales being 100% box-less.

Oh, and it was the most-watched game on Twitch when it launched, unsurprisingly.

So yeah. Borderlands 3 is a pretty big deal. Gearbox also recently announced some new Halloween-themed DLC, so within a month or so people will have even more reason to give it a play.

I, personally, am less than charmed by the latest game in this billion-dollar franchise, but I’ll talk about that later.
