Blizzard Remaking Warcraft 3, Diablo 2, and Starcraft

Blizzard is best known now for World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, Diablo 3, and Starcraft 2. But most of those--all of them, if you really want to stretch the term--are sequels in well-established franchises that are very, very old. The first Warcraft game, when it was still an RTS and called Orcs Vs Humans, came out in 1995. Diablo first appeared in 1997, and Starcraft followed soon afterwards in 1998. So these games are old, old, old--and in today’s modern gaming world, where people are as interested in looking back as they are in moving forward, there’s a market for these old games--never mind the fact they’re almost unplayable by today’s standards.

Fortunately, Blizzard is looking to fix this, or at least, address it in some of their more recent old games. Taken from a recent job posting on their website, we have this little nugget:

"Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation. We're restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done."

Well if there was ever a time for humility I suppose your own job posting isn’t the place. But regardless of boasting, I don’t think they could be much clearer--they’re planning HD remakes of their older games. Not their oldest games, sure, but come on--there are people who clamor for a new Warcraft RTS, Diablo 2 is beloved for being simpler than Diablo 3’s always-online bull, and there are people who still competitively play Starcraft 1. Of every HD remake we’ve had and we’re going to get, these at least make enormous sense.

Plus, since they’re all so multiplayer focused, being able to play them with others--the way they’re largely intended to be played--will go a great deal to improving the experience. Now, the job post does clearly state they plan on adding new features in edition to remastering old ones, so it’s not impossible Diablo 2 will get bogged down with always-online or something like that, but… hey, better than nothing, right?

Also, if you so happen to qualify and you're between jobs--congratulations!
