It was a welcome surprise when Nintendo announced that Diablo 3 would be coming to the Nintendo Switch. It's also an equally welcome surprise to hear that there will even be an official Amiibo for the game, based on the Loot Goblin.

Announced on the official Diablo Twitter account, Gamestop is to be the exclusive retailer of an official Blizzard Loot Goblin Amiibo, compatible with the Diablo 3: Eternal Collection for Nintendo Switch. Sold only at Gamestop's online store, it costs $15.99 and is available now.

The actual function of the loot goblin remains a mystery at this time. The store description only states that it "opens up a portal in game." In the standard game, the loot goblin appears randomly within the world. If the player can defeat them in time, they'll drop various rewards, depending on the type of goblin. They will also run away via a portal if the player doesn't kill them quick enough. This may mean that the Amiibo will open a portal for the player, allowing them to access a secret area. It's also likely that the Amiibo will summon a loot goblin out of the portal it creates, allowing players to summon the encounter on their own terms.

The physical figurine itself bears a strong similarity to the Treasure Goblin vinyl toy released a few years ago, but with a different coat of paint and an Amiibo base.

Stay tuned for more information as it is made available to us.
