Diablo 2, which was first launched in 2000, is quite old by now, and has even got a sequel launched that's gone to make a lot of good, mostly honest money. But that doesn't mean it's been ignored: Blizzard has been hosting servers for the game diligently since it's launch, and even today, there's a sizeable community of Diablo fans still hacking and slashing their way through the isometric corridors of Sanctuary. So the game is still around, it's still played, and because of this, Blizzard has an obligation to keep it in good shape.
And recently, that's what they did, releasing the first patch for the game in five years, called Patch 1.14a. It fixes system glitches and improves the game's ability to be run on modern hardware. It also improves the installer for OSX, and improves the game's ability to detect hacks and cheats--no Torchlight-style mods for you, m' afraid.
But at the bottom of the patch notes, we saw something interesting. Here it is, in full:
There is still a large Diablo II community around the world, and we thank you for continuing to play and slay with us. This journey starts by making Diablo II run on modern platforms, but it does not end there. See you in Sanctuary, adventurers.
"It does not end there", huh? What could that possibly mean? Fans have been speculating, and while there's some talk that maybe they're going to integrate the game into the modern Battle.net client, that's not all it could mean. I, for one would be excited to see if this means there'll be new content added to the game. That would certainly prove interesting!
But it's all speculation at this point. We'll find out soon enough, however--of that much, I'm positive.
...Unless someone dies of a freak accident or something. Then I guess they won't find out.
