Blizzard Almost Added A Cat In a Jetpack Into Overwatch

Thank god they didn't.

Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan seems to always be listening and interacting with the community, and yet, he never ceases to amaze me. It's very rare these days to have a developer that actively takes an interest in what the community as a whole and even individuals have to say. Jeff Kaplan was recently interviewed by Gamespot and he had quite a bit of juicy information to share. While Ubisoft is lying in hot water with the For Honor community because of lack of communication, Blizzard is setting an example of how developers should treat their player base. After all, when the community isn't happy, the same goes for the developer.

Jeff Kaplan had a pretty extensive interview with Gamespot, but here are some of the juiciest bits:
  • New hero development will go at the same pace it has, which is roughly every four months because I think we need to take a step back from hero development in Overwatch and really evaluate what it does to the meta
  • Blizzard contacted the girl who insulted another kid by calling him a Hanzo main. Kaplan told GameSpot, The parents sent back this lovely letter to us and said, We appreciate it so much that you guys reached out. We've been talking to our daughter about not making fun of somebody for maining a certain hero.
  • They also considered a hero that was this jetpack and it had this cat that laid in it, like a cat does. Then every once in awhile it would pay at the controls. It was a cat in a jetpack.
  • Kaplan prefers Hanzo to Genji, adding that, no, Genji will never get patched out
Overwatch obviously has a lot of interesting and unique heroes, but I don't think anybody could have guessed that Blizzard actually considered adding a cat hero into the game. I mean, I guess it makes sense, considering how the internet loves cat memes. Slap a jetpack onto a cat, and that's a pretty hilarious idea for a hero, but I'm fairly certain it might have been a little too ridiculous, even for Overwatch. When Kaplan was asked if they could patch Genji out of the game, he responds in a pretty witty manner, stating that they could, but won't. Genji mains can rest assured.

Blizzard and Jeff Kaplan are known to respond to fan letters pretty frequently, and Kaplan touched on a more recent letter where a girl was making fun of another kid by calling him a "Hanzo main". Blizzard contacted the girl, and the parents responded claiming that they're teaching their daughter not to discriminate against other people for maining a hero. Give these parents a medal for being amazingly cool. I'm sure Jeff Kaplan was pleased to hear back from the parents since he also likes Hanzo a lot, and prefers him to Genji.
