It’s been a while since we checked in on the pro Heartstone player Chung “Blitzchung” Ng Wai, who boldly stood up for his beliefs, exposed Blizzard for the hypocritical money-chasing jerks that they are, and was a hero to the Blizzard community until Diablo 4 was announced and everyone immediately forgot like the goldfish they are. I’m still pissed off about that.
Anyway, the dude is still suspended, but in a recent interview with a youtube channel called People Make Games, he revealed that if he could go back in time, he would do it all again in a heartbeat.
Blitzchung’s story, of course, has only grown more complicated since he first boldly put a gas mask on in his post-victory interview. On top of getting a one-year suspension and losing all of his winnings (which was later softened to a six-month suspension, with the money returned), he inspired professional casters to retire, legions of gamers to delete their Blizzard accounts, and spawned countless memes – such as Mei, a famously Chinese Overwatch character, becoming a symbol of anti-Chinese revolution. For a time.
Despite all of that, however, Blitzchung still has hope for the future – and apparently, no ill will towards Blizzard. He even says they remind him of Hong Kong itself – it’s getting worse, but he doesn’t hate it.
It also revealed that the 21-year-old man is using his time away from professional play to relax a bit. Kind of. He’s dropped out of school, partially because he wasn’t used to his sudden fame, but also because China has their eye on him right now and he doesn’t want to wind up a victim of their increasingly oppressive regime.
In any case, the full video is definitely worth a look. I still admire Blitzchung and his actions, so I hope people aren’t quick to forget his courage.
