Blighttown gets a Stable 60 FPS in Dark Souls: Remastered

Even on a base PS4.

Dark Souls veterans will remember the low framerate-ridden wretches that encompass Blighttown. Whether it's from the overly large area, the water-covered floor, or the many torches, this area was a struggle for console and PC alike. Navigating the vertical scaffolding, being assailed by poison, and being pushed off of edges were difficult enough, but doing all that while handling the stutter of FPS drops made it infamously unbearable.

Fortunately, this won't be a problem with the remaster. Digital Foundry extensively analyzed the FPS rate of Dark Souls on every console and compared them to the Dark Souls Remaster on the PS4 and PS4 Pro. While the original games had a base frame rate of 30 fps, Blighttown would cause frequent drops to as low as 10 fps.

When tested on a base PS4, Dark Souls Remastered was able to hold a firm 60 frames per second the entire time while rendering at 1080p resolution. This is remarkably impressive, given that even with top-of-the-line hardware, a PC running DSFix at 1080p would even dip to around 40 fps in this area. Even more impressive is the PS4 Pro, which renders Blighttown at 60 fps at 1800p resolution.

No information about how the Xbox One and Xbox One X handle the area is available. Based on information taken from the recent network test, the Xbox consoles had a harder rendering time than the PlayStation consoles. These analytics are also without the day one patch, which will resolve additional issues that the remaster might have.

Dark Souls: Remastered is out May 25 on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch version has been delayed with no new release date given.
