Remember those rumors we heard earlier about Black Ops 4 giving up the traditional single-player campaign and replacing it with a Battle Royale mode? Remember how we all groaned and rolled our eyes because with this, the triple-A industry would officially be throwing its hat into the Battle Royale sphere and there would be no going back? Remember how we all bemoaned the possibility that games would completely give up the single-player experience for more and more contrived multiplayer modes?

Well, to the surprise of no one, the worst-case scenario is actually happening. Say hello to Call of Duty 4: Blackout.

In Blackout, Black Ops comes to life in one massive battle royale experience, combining Black Ops signature combat and the biggest map in Call of Duty history. Play as fan favorite characters and battle through iconic settings from the Black Ops universe. It’s a collision course bringing together the worlds of Black Ops in an all-out survival and elimination experience featuring weapons; equipment; land, sea, and air vehicles; RC-XDs; traps; and even Zombies in an experience that is uniquely Black Ops.

What I like about this trailer is that it almost seems self-aware of the fact that this is a flavor-of-the-month trend-chasing bad idea, and it preemptively defends itself by saying they’re putting a unique spin on a familiar formula. And it’s cool that they acknowledge this could be problematic, but it would be even cooler if they decided not to do it. But whatever, this is the world we live in I guess.

Anyway. The map will be 1500 times larger than Nuketown and will have a host of familiar characters, weapons, and locations. But we don’t know much in the way of exact details quite yet, so, I guess we’ll just have to stay posted.

With baited breath, I guess.
