Kirby, the cute, pink puffball of Dreamland, can do just about anything they set their mind to. And that includes winning a Grammy, apparently. Okay, maybe Kirby himself didnt. But a song from the game franchise did.
With all of the Oscars drama, where Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, It's easy to have missed it, but the Grammys took place recently. While generally a film and traditional music event, one special outlier to the awards included a nomination for Charlie Rosen and Jake Silverman. The pair was nominated for Best Arrangement, Instrumental, or A Cappella for a Big Band style arrangement of Meta Knights Revenge, from Kirby Superstar.
The winner of the award, as you likely have guessed by this point, was indeed Charlie Rosen and Jake Silverman. The song, specifically, released early last year by The 8-Bit Big Band who also performed the song (with a feature by Button Masher). Linked above, we can definitely see why the track would be noteworthy, it absolutely slaps.
What makes this particularly interesting, however, is the rarity to see a video game song in any capacity be presented at the Grammys. This is only the second time a game track has won, and third time one was even nominated. The other winner was in 2010, when Christoper Tin won with a Civ 4 track. The nomination that didnt win was in 2013 when Austin Wintory was nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for Journey.
Kirby has been making plenty of headlines lately with the release of their most recent game, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which came out last week. The game brings the franchise into a 3D platformer action/adventure game, in which Kirby is thrown into what appears to be a post-apocolyptic world where shopping malls have become overgrown and abandoned.
We recently played through Kirby and the Forgotten Land ourselves when it came out and we were tremendously satisfied with the game overall. Expect a more proper written article, maybe a review, about it later on.
Otherwise, the now award-winning Meta Knights Revenge Big Band performance is available online and on various streaming platforms.
