Rage 2, the highly anticipated action first-person shooter, released earlier this week. And at the ripe old age of "three days," publisher Bethesda has announced the removal of the Denuvo DRM software from the game.

"JasonBethesda" recently posted on the Rage 2 announcement forums, detailing the changes of a new hotfix. The fix would make the following changes:

  • Removes Denuvo DRM (We saw a few requests.)
  • Enables Crash Reporter for error reporting
  • Fixes occasional crash related to Scaleform
  • Fixes occasional crash on startup
  • Fixes issue where Bethesda.net users would always default to English
  • Razer Chroma effects enabled by default

They conclude the post by suggesting that any issues to Bethesda Customer Support.

While Denuvo being removed post-launch is nothing new. This is a little different. Normally it takes a few days to a week after launch before Denuvo is cracked by game pirates, though it's been cracked as quickly as four days BEFORE the game's release.

It's surprising to hear how quickly they removed the DRM software, even making a remark on how it was commonly requested. A common claim is that Denuvo is meant to preserve launch day sales, but the Bethesda.net version of the game did not contain Denuvo.

It's not clear why Bethesda removed it so soon, nor why it was even installed. But it's gone now, so good for us.
