Bethesda Doubles Down on Commitment to Single-Player Games

Sometimes it's better to go at it alone.

Bethesda has been enjoying some lingering spotlight after a great E3, and a number of follow-up videos and trailers that have been putting their fans in an excited, hyperventilating froth. We have a lot of upcoming Bethesda games to look forward too, and a shocking number of them are single player or single-player focused (looking at you, Doom Eternal). And in a talk with Metro UK, Bethesda’s vice president of PR and marketing Pete Hines doubled down on their commitment to single-player games after the interviewer pointed out that if it weren’t for them, Sony, and Nintendo, the industry would basically not have those anymore.

“It is certainly something that we feel is important and is always gonna be a part of what we’re doing. I mean we’re here, we’ve got Rage 2, we’ve just announced Doom Eternal, we’ve just put out DLC for Prey, there’s Elder Scrolls: Blades – it’s single-player but it also includes an online component… Single-player is an important part of who we are but we’re also willing to have BGS [Bethesda Game Studios] say, ‘We get asked about online and multiplayer and we want to try and do a multiplayer version of our kind of games.”

He also used the interview to confirm that another Wolfenstein Game was definitely in the works, that the rumors of Dishonored being dead in the water were overblown, and that he has spoken with Nintendo about Super Smash Brothers, although he coyly wouldn’t say anything more than that, beyond affirming that they have a pretty good relationship with the Big N. So yeah, it’s a good interview to check out if you’re a fan.

That said, the interviewer does have a good point: the number of good single-player developers out there seem to be getting smaller every day… that’s worth keeping an eye on.
