PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is a new "battle royale", last-man-standing shooter that's taking Steam by storm and is quickly becoming one of the most popular titles of its genre. Just three days after it became available, it's made over $11 million in sales and has taken the top seller spot on Steam. Not only is it receiving very positive reviews from players and critics, but it's also become very popular on Twitch with over 150k viewers across 3,600 streams since it launched on March 23rd.

Battle-royale games in which players are spawned into an arena and fight to the death using the resources available are becoming more and more popular, but PlayUnknown's Battlegrounds has managed to set itself apart from competitors and improve upon the genre. PlayerUnknown's Battleground offers a much more strategic and realistic gameplay experience than it's competitors. Players start with nothing and have to battle to locate weapons and supplies in an 8x8 km island arena, in order to be the lone survivor.

Brendan Greene AKA PlayerUnknown has a lot of experience in the battle royale genre. He is the creator of the battle royale game mode in the ARMA series and also the creator of H1Z1: King of The Kill. Greene is co-developing this game along with the team at Bluehole in an attempt to make the best battle royale experience to date. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has made a huge impact since launch, but since it's in early access, the majority of its problems and issues are related to optimization. Its future success will depend on whether or not the developers can successfully optimize the game in time and actually give it a full release. Based on it's success so far, I think the future is bright.
