Battlefield 5 Won't Be Pay to Win, EA Assures Us

It might not even have loot boxes.

EA found itself once again at the #1 spot of everyone’s shitlist last year when they tainted the launch of the highly-anticipated Star Wars Battlefront 2 with pay-to-win lootbox mechanics that literally nobody liked but their shareholders, and even then only until the backlash caused the game to underperform and the government to actually put its foot down. So with Battlefield 5 on the way, EA has realized that if people think it’s going to be a repeat of Battlefront 2, the sales are probably going to take a hit.

So they’re playing it safe this time around: not only will Battlefield 5 not have loot boxes, it also won’t even have a premium currency… at least… not at launch.

"As you play and progress through Battlefield 5, you will earn Company Coin. Company Coin gives you the ability to choose items outside the base progression paths to further expand and customize your Company. You can use Company Coin to unlock choices within weapon and vehicle Specializations. You can also use Company Coin to get cosmetic items, such as jackets, face paint, and weapon skins. At launch, cosmetic items will be available for soldiers and weapons. Vehicle cosmetics will be available in the first chapter of Tides of War.

Battlefield 5 will also have an optional currency known as Battlefield Currency, which is purchased with real-world money. Battlefield Currency can be used to acquire specific cosmetic items for your Company."

This optional currency won’t be available when the game first launches, as EA says they want people to get a feel for the game before they start charging money for extra cosmetic options. If that’s actually “good” is up for debate, but at least they learned something. I’ll take that.

Battlefield 5 will come out November 20th, but the now-mandatory Battle Royale mode will be released later, in spring of next year.
