Battlefield 1 Takes Action Against Grenade Spam

Say no to grenade spam!

Grenade spam is somewhat of a troublesome issue in some shooters and it can be tough to tackle. Battlefield 1 is no exception to the issue, especially with the large size/scale of games. With 32 players per team, depending on the map, grenades can start to fly in mass amounts and create some pretty chaotic situations. Choke holds and narrows locations can quickly become death pits to the point of no hope. With the support class having the ability to ressupply grenades, this can make certain games total hell for grenade spam.

Thankfully, Battlefield 1 is taking action against grenade spam with a new initivate called Ammo 2.0. Instead of having a fixed amount of grenades, players will know have a single grenade that will start a cooldown process right after being used. While this does indeed mean infinite grenades, this change is aimed to prevent spontaneous grenade spam by delaying the abiility to throw grenade after grenade. Players can still co-ordinate grenade throw, but it be impossible to consistently dish out grenades. Ammo packs will now speed up the cooldown instead of resupplying grenades.

The cooldown based resupply shifts the benefit of the ammo box from long term to short term, with the cooldown giving small amounts of ammo over the long term, we can reduce the starting ammo of many gadgets, making having ammo most important during a fight instead of after. said a DICE representative on Reddit.

This mechanic is basically the same apporach that DICE took with Star Wars Battlefront. Some players are quite sceptical about this decision and some just don't agree with it whatsoever. The idea of infinite grenades is definitely scary, and I think people want to avoid the same problems that Battlefront suffered. While it's definitely with good intent, this decision by DICE is somewhat unexpected since grenades use has been fine throughout the entire Battlefield series. Why they've decided to tackle this now is unknown, but hopefully they listen to the community feedback.
