Battleborn. The game you forget exists about five seconds after you’re reminded it exists. Just about everything went wrong for Gearbox’s little game that couldn’t, but despite that, the company seems dedicated to doing everything they can to turn the game around, seemingly unaware that it’s already crashed, set on fire, and just waiting for someone to put it out of its misery.
Their latest attempt was revealed just the other day when it was revealed that the game would be going FREE TO PLAY… kind of. Moving to a free-to-play model was something the company should have tried ages ago, and it seems like it’s just too late at this point… especially since we were told late last year that it wasn’t going to happen.
So here’s the situation. Right now, Xbox One, PS4, and PC players can download Battleborn, absolutely free. From there, they get access to 6 characters, rotated on a weekly basis, and with those six characters (whom they can level up, gear up, and unlock skins for) they can play as many competitive multiplayer games as they want on the game’s now five maps. However, if they want to play the full game, you’ll either have to buy it piece-by-piece with premium currency or with in-game credits or buy the whole thing for the retail price.
On the bright side, if you choose to buy the full version at any time, you’ll get refunded for any products you already bought. Plus, players who already had the game will get boosted to Founder status, which nets them Legendary Gear, 1000 Platinum, 50,000 Credits, loot packs, a "Founder's Crown" flair item, and other bonuses.
Seems good. But, I repeat myself, also seems way too late. While this news might temporarily put Battleborn back into people’s heads, by the end of the day, we’re all going to forget again, and Gearbox will have to gear up for the inevitable Borderlands 3 they know they need to make.
Without Handsome Jack. Please.
