It's been 5 long years, but after trials, struggles, mistakes, small victories and huge setbacks... the moment has finally arrived. The Battleborne saga has come to a close as, at last, the servers of this once-promising game from Gearbox have now been shut down, leaving all those who log into the game to be greeted with this message:
"Heroes! It's been a hell of a ride, but all fights must end. The campaign and multiplayer are no longer available as the Battleborn servers are offline. Thank you for playing."
Of course, Battleborn has been functionally dead for a while now: Gearbox stopped releasing updates and patches for the game a few years ago, and new content was stopped not long before that. Gearbox kept the servers running as a matter of course, but since the servers never got more than 200 people playing at the same time, there was no incentive from Gearbox to try and revive the property -- particularly as time has only introduced more competitors to the genre(s) it occupied, not less.
But still, with the servers shut down, Battleborn now offically enters gaming history. It could have made it big, but bad timing, poor management, weird marketing, and bad luck ultimately did it in.
Goodnight, sweet prince.
