For those unaware, Turtle Rock Studios, the team developing Back 4 Blood, is made up of many original Left 4 Dead developers. As such, the game is commonly seen as a spiritual successor to Valves zombie franchise. One very popular game mode in there was Versus Campaign. In this game mode, the human players would run through a standard campaign session, while another team of players would control the special infected zombies.
While Back 4 Blood will have a co-op campaign, and a versus mode, the developers have confirmed that they will NOT have a versus campaign game mode. But they have a very valid reason for leaving it out.
The team held an FAQ thread in their official Discord server, where they confirmed the absence of the game mode. When questioned as to why, Chris Ashton, co-founder and design director, explained it as a balance reason.
We have a lot of defensive equipment and our specials are good at ambushing. Defending worked far better for our game than running from A-B.
So to put a little simpler: The game is built around taking it slow and hunkering down when needed. Campaign like modes would not be as enjoyable to play as in the past. This makes sense. Though not everyone agrees. Plenty of folks online are upset about the change, saying that the mode was paramount to their enjoyment. But this is the gaming industry, people online will always be upset.
Maybe this is a deal breaker for you. Maybe not. If youre unsure, why not take part in the upcoming Open Beta taking place on August 12 through 16. It will be free to play and will give players a chance to feel out how the game is before buying.
If this ISNT a deal breaker, then you can purchase the game when it releases on PC, consoles, and Xbox Game Pass on October 12.
