We grow ever closer to the release of Back 4 Blood, the cooperative zombie shooter from Turtle Rock Studios. And to get us prepped and ready, the developers have detailed how their card dealing game modification system will work.
The studio recently released a trailer, spanning a little over three minutes long. In it, they explain how the game will use a deck building like system to change both the challenges that players will face, and the benefits they can lean on.
They explain it with a personification known as the Game Director. The game uses an AI system to detect the players skills, progress, and current situation, using that information to modify how the game is currently running. The details arent terribly clear on how it works, but they claim that it will ensure an exciting experience for all players.
First, the game director draws corruption cards. These cards choose what kind of zombies the players will encounter. In it, we see variations like Armored, and Hag. It also has the chance for environmental events, like disabling the electricity, leaving players in the darkness.
Each player has their own hand of cards to use, as well. Choosing from a wide variety of options, players can enable modifiers that increase health, speed, ammo reserves, revival time, and more. The game will offer premade card sets to quickly use. Players will also have the option to build their own sets from cards they collect via gameplay.
Its important to note that deck cards will NOT be available as microtransactions. There will be no additional monetization. With this being a common problem in major games in our current industry climate, it was a concern. This will also be true for the various cosmetic options players can unlock.
Back 4 Blood will release on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation on October 12, 2021.
