And that worry was justified.
At launch, the game bombed. With mostly negative reviews (even though many positive reviews are jokes regarding how awful it is).
Going through them, I can say with confidence that Atlas' developers, who have also created ARK, pretty much just wanted a quick buck from players.
This is because of suspicions raised with the menu UI of Atlas being too similar to ARK's menu UI. Additionally, if you open the hidden ARK Menu screen with a controller and clicked on "OCEAN" in ARK's DLC, you'll see a "Start in Singleplayer" option. If you access that, Atlas will be booted into the singleplayer mode and you'll start with the character creation screen.
So yeah, that confirmation proves that Atlas was intended to be ARK DLC. What's so disgusting about the decision to mark the DLC as a full game is the fact that it is not included in the season pass of ARK. Meaning it was trying to earn more money ($30 per copy, by the by) by making the game a standalone title.
Other complaints included:
- Most assets from ARK are being reused for Atlas.
- Servers only hold up to 150, not the 40,000 players the developers claimed.
- Unstable servers.
- Many, many bugs.
- Being tossed randomly into the ocean and far away from any island, where you die as a result.
- Horrible frame rates.
So yeah, not a good idea to support the devs at this time. Save your money or spend it on something tasty.
