If you've heard about history repeating itself, then what's about to happen might shock you a bit less.
Yep. It looks like Atari is going back to the hardware game with this so-called "Atari Box", if the URL in the description is anything to go off of. The video linked above is technically everything we know about the system, being nothing, but there are still a few things we can postulate with simple logic.
The way I see it, one of three options exist: it's either a retro console, like what Nintendo released, a brand-new Triple A console, or a piece of hardware that's unrelated to gaming. The first option doesn't seem too likely, as Atari has been doing the plug-and-play console thing for years now and they've never made a big deal of it. And Atari would have had to leak somehow if they were going into non-gaming hardware, as they are a public company and that's typically that's the kind of thing you need to tell Investors about beforehand. But yet, the idea of Atari, of all people, deciding to enter the triple-A console market now seems laughable. Maybe four years ago when the console wars had a "gap" thanks to the Wii U barely being present, I could have believed it, but now? The PS4, Xbox One, and Switch are doing better than ever.
What I wouldn't give to be a fly in Atari HQ's wall right now.
We'll have to keep our eyes peeled to find out more about this Ataribox...
