Announced during a live video stream, game director Masahiro Sakurai sat down in his home to reveal who the next fighter for the immensely popular fighting game Super Smash Bros Ultimate would be. Nintendo promoted the reveal previously, stating that it would be a fighter from ARMS.
The video began with Sakurai explaining that the ongoing pandemic has complicated development somewhat, and that to best adhere to quarantine, he will be presenting the new fighter from his own home. He even takes a moment to show off where he plays video games.
It's followed by an explanation of what ARMS is. It's a 3D fighting game released at the beginning of the Nintendo Switch's lifetime. The main draw of the game is that each playable character had arms that could extend outward at dramatic ranges, each with special abilities they can perform. But there are a handful of ARMS fighters, who's going to be in Smash?
It's Min Min, the noodle girl! Min Min works at the local Mintendo Noodle House. With arms made of ramen noodles, she extends a special dragon ARM weapon capable of shooting lasers. Sakurai explained that they decided on Min Min under the special request of ARMS director Mabuki requested her specifically. He also remarked that if you search for Spring Man online (the frontman for the ARMS game), you'll find a lot of results for Mega Mans enemy of the same name.
Min Mins Abilities in Smash Bros Ultimate
Min Min is a ranged fighter, using extending arms to attack enemies from a fair distance. As a result, she is somewhat slow and cannot easily attack and defend from above or below her. This makes her a spacing character at best.
The main gimmick is that instead of having normal attacks and special attacks, the A and B buttons control her right and left arms accordingly. The player can time when they swing their punches to best control the battlefield.
To keep things diverse, the down special move will swap out which ARMS weapon is equipped in the left hand. This cycles between the Dragon, the Ramram, and the Megawatt. Each one serves a similar but still different purpose on the battlefield.
Her up special attack also changes depending on if the player is in the air or not. When on the ground, it's a skyward launch that goes higher when you hold it down. When in the air, however, her arm extends outward like a grapple.
Min Min also comes with a new special stage: the Spring Stadium. This stage features platforms on the main stage that, when activated, will boost any player that jumps off of them. It also has large arches overtop of the stage. If blasted away at the right angle, they can hit these instead of falling off screen. Lastly, if items are on, a small drone will deliver them to the battlefield.
Min Min and her relevant content will be available as part of the Smash Bros Challenger Pack Volume 2. This pack will include six new fighters, six new stages, and five new Mii Costumes. It will cost $25.
Speaking of which, they also revealed the new Mii costumes.
- ARMS fighter Ninjara for Mii Brawler
- Tekken fighter Heiachi for Mii Brawler
- Splatoon hosts Callie and Marie for Mii Brawler and Mii Gunner Respectively
- Fallout mascot Vault Boy for the Mii Gunner
