Gears of War Creator Cliff Bleszinski recently mentioned his views on modern video games and how they have become a lot easier and more linear. In an effort to expand their audience, the focus has shifted towards making games more accessible, whereas harsh difficulty and a satisfying challenge was considered a strength in previous generations. His exact comments are below;
"The more I play games like that the more I turned off to them and just want to get back to systems interacting with systems, and get back to a game that, you know, when was the last time a game really challenged you and asked something of you, right?" Bleszinski noted, further adding "There's a reason why Demon's Souls and Dark Souls have taken off lately. It's because they really require you actually try."
When creating Gears of War Judgement, he said;
While I might not agree that video games have become more linear, if anything they used to be TOO linear in the past but I will agree on the fact that games are far too easy and even too short now days. What say you?"If this game doesn't make you sweat, we haven't done our jobs."
