Apex Legends, the second most popular Battle Royale game and the reason we’re not getting a Titanfall 3, has been doing quite well as of late, and is currently on season 5, which is about four seasons longer than a lot of people suspected it would last. It’s got characters, new maps, and it hosts seasonal events that offer unique gameplay and cosmetics – for example, they announced the “Lost Treasures” event just earlier today, which has a host of new stuff to unlock and do.

If there were thing holding Apex Legends back, it was the fact that the PC version of the game was only available on EA Origin, and that there is no cross-play. Fortunately, EA is finally fixing both of these problems, as they also announced that “this fall”, Apex Legends would be available on Steam (which EA has been doing with a lot of their games as of late, including Titanfall 2) and it would be getting cross play, so people across every console and platform will be able to play together.

Oh, and it’ll be coming to the Switch, too.

Now, this is objectively good for fans of the game, who like myself have been waiting for a long time to get cross play. But it does make one wonder if maybe Apex Legends is struggling somewhat? After all, the main benefit of cross play is that players are no longer stuck playing with people who are only using the same platform, but outside losing the ability to play with some friends, generally it’s not a big problem… unless the player base is dwindling so much that players are running out of new people to play with.

Granted, that’s probably not a problem for Apex Legends, given that EA doesn’t really have a history of trying to save something that’s failed them, but it’s an angle worth considering.
