Anthem to Release March 2019, Will "Offer Something Entirely New"

Good thing EA's so trustworthy!

EA had a financial call yesterday, and in it, the company inevitably found itself talking about Anthem, the definitely-not Destiny clone that’s likely Bioware’s last shot before EA decides to take them behind the shed and show them where they hid Visceral’s body.

While most details won’t be known until the game is shown off at this year’s E3 (if you want to assume we’ll learn much, chances are we’ll just get some prerecorded cinematics and more vague promises), we did learn a few new things in this call. CEO Andrew Wilson offered some prepared statements, calling the game “stunning and ambitious,” and then made the eyebrow-raising claim that this will be a new, exciting type of game unlike any that had come before it.

"Every dimension of this game will offer something entirely new for a wide audience of players, from a new universe with unique stories that BioWare is creating, to the cooperative gameplay, to the epic and beautiful environment that constantly evolves around players."

He elaborated on that last point:

"Anthem is a fundamentally social experience, and we will open new ways for fans to join the community and play early, enabling us to shape and refine the game with their input and feedback,"

They also talked a bit about the game’s projected release, and he mentioned they hope to release it at the end of the financial year: which would mean it would launch squarely within a March 2019 window. That’s actually further away than I would have guessed, but it makes sense that Bioware would want to take their time with this one: not only because they have a lot to prove, but also because the company has historically done a bad job with multiplayer modes and making a whole game that orbits around it means they need some extra time to work out the kinks.

We’ll have quite a wait before we find out for sure, though.
