Like it or not, for better or for worse, Anita Sarkeesian is the current face representing women in gaming. While it’s sad such a decisive figure with so many controversial views has to take that moniker, it’s hard to argue it’s not well-deserved, after all the hate she’s suffered and all the threats to her life and well-being she’s endured. And it was as gaming’s feminist representative that she made a surprise appearance on last night’s Colbert Report—the clip of which I have included below.
Forgive the poor quality, we can’t embed video clips directly from Comedy Centeral’s website.
It’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect from an interview between Colbert and Anita Sarkeesian to go, and that’s not a bad thing by any means. Plus, the response she got from the crowd—there was a lot of genuine cheers—was really heartwarming, especially compared to the comments to the YouTube video itself, which was decidedly less so.
Indeed, predictably, every time Anita Sarkeesian opens her mouth, there’s an immediate and violent backlash from her opponents. There’s the usual “I hope she gets raped/dies/whatever gristly fate they imagine”, there’s some lies (“She used to propagate #cancelcolbert! Hypocrisy!”) with the occasional spot of more well-meaning criticism that gets entirely drowned out by the screaming hate mongrels that surround it.
Still, the crowd liked her. And nobody attacked the studio, so, it all went well, as far as I’m concerned.
