Good.
Miss Battle Squadron?
If you've never heard of the title, Battle Squadron is a vertically scrolling shooter for the Amiga computer platform that has been previously ported to the Sega Mega Drive but later ported to iOS, Android, AmigaOS 4, Windows, OS X, and MorphOS. Offering multiplayer, Battle Squadron is a direct sequel to Hybris that carries big sprites and roughly 25 weapon upgrades.
Now, imagine the burning desire fans carry to play the game. Some never had the opportunity to play at first release and/or may not have heard of the modern ports. Some also feel that they need to support the game and the developers so often that they will purchase the Battle Squadron for every platform.
It was only a matter of time before it happened.
Battle Squadron has finally lurked onto the Steam platform. Here's the base plot, taken directly from Steam:
"Attention Commanders: Incoming Earth Defense Fleet message...
Your mission code C61-178DE is to rescue Commander Berry D. Mayers and Commander Lori Bergin and their star ship. THe E.D.F. inter-track scanner picked up signatures from a huge Barrax alien army enemy object moving towards the hollow planet Terrainia. Data indicates that the hollow Planet Terrainia is their home base and is much feared due to cloaked enemy ships and the deep unfriendly subterranean worlds with frightening alien species."
"We have equipped your ships with our new universal ultimate weapon: The NOVA missile.
On behalf of Earth Defense Fleet... Engage and terminate Commanders!
Taking place many years in the future in another star system, a century long war has been waging between the Earth Defence Fleet and the ruthless Barrax Empire, with mass casualties on both sides. Your comrades Commanders Bergin and Mayers have been captured on a reconnaissance mission and are currently being held hostage on the hostile planet of Terrainia. Your mission: to rescue the commanders and eliminate the Barrax threat that exists on the planet. Good luck."
Not a bad plot for such a retro game!
Here are the Key Features to look forward to:
- Engage the Barrax Empire in classic vertical scrolling combat.
- Take down hordes of enemies within multiple levels.
- Conquer ground defences, vehicles, aircraft and alien technology to increase your score.
- Power-ups and hidden caches will be available so you can survive to the best of your ability.
- Level up various weapons that will prove fierce against many a foe.
- Ultimate showdowns for every boss at the end of every level.
- You can change the speed and quantity of enemy bullets, which in turn changes the difficulty level.
- There's a leaderboard that has your name written all over it.
- There is also a co-op mode! Hooray!
The game released June 30 on Steam with a special promotion of 15% off that will end in about 39 hours. So instead of paying $6.99, you will instead be burning a $5.94 hole in your pocket. But hey, this is a classic that is well-loved, so it shouldn't prove to be a waste. If you are wary, you could always watch the ten-minute long gameplay video:
