In an interesting new development, it seems a
controller bearing the Amazon logo got leaked. Early reports have been saying that the console itself will most likely not be intended to compete with the Playstation or Xbox, and will be around the same processing level as the ill-fated Ouya. The controller has the ergonomics of the OnLive controller (that's the system that streams games directly to TV from a server so you don't have to buy a console, if you don't remember), though hopefully not the same cheap feeling to it. It also seems to have some playback features, possibly meaning that the console will also be intended for use with services like Prime and Netflix, and the globe-shaped button in the center hints at internet capability. Though there is early speculation that the operating system it's going to use is Android, only time (and Amazon) can tell.
A little chunky, yeah, but do you remember the first Xbox controller? That thing was a dinner plate.
Seriously though, after the failure of the Ouya and the mixed success of the OnLive, you can only hope so much for a console with that power level (no Vegeta jokes, please). In respect to Amazon, though, they DO have the servers and overall capital to make an improved version of the OnLive if they really want to. The OnLive was only unsuccessful because of the lag levels that it had, which were around 150 ms. Just a liiiiiiittle too much chop, in my opinion. It'd certainly do well in the casual market if done right, and quite honestly, that's nothing to sneer at.
Good luck to you, Amazon. Let's see what you got.
