It has been heavily rumored that Amazon would be entering the console market for months now-- and without even acknowledging the rumors, Amazon just decided to launch the damn thing. Don't take my word for it though, they let Gary Busey out of the mental hospital to tell you all about it-
The android based system retails for $99 and you will need to purchase the controller separately for $40.
Even though the system is being marketed mostly as a media hub, Amazon has invested quite a bit into gaming content-- forming their own Amazon Game Studios. We know at least one of these studios is Double Helix, who were purchased by Amazon after developing the successful Xbox One launch title Killer Instinct. Besides just playing existing Android games with converted controls, there is also a slew of exclusive first party games in development by Amazon.
The titles seem to range from third-person Arena shooters, to RPGs, to platformers... some even allow you to use the Kindle Fire tablet to control features of the game (like an overhead commander view for calling in air support). The style of the games and console pricepoint would make it seem that Amazon is targeting the more casual crowd. Unfortunately this is the same demographic that the Ouya has been struggling to appeal to, and with the marketing might of Amazon... might be an Ou No! for Ouya.
For those wanting the system, you can buy it right now. There's already been over 100 customer reviews of the system in less than 24 hours, and not a single one of them has actually even received their system yet (or even purchased it). For those of you who want to actually know what they might be buying first, here is a preview video of the first party titles in the works and a comparison chart with the other similarly priced products on the market.
