But for all its prestige, trading card games simply aren’t’ as big a deal anymore, and it would be a shame to leave a property like Magic: The Gathering behind just because of a little wanting flexibility. Fortunately, Wizards of the Coast has no intention of letting Magic: The Gathering fall into obscurity, and they’ve enlisted Cryptic Studios and Perfect World to craft a Magic: The Gathering MMO.
Let that sink in. An MMO based on a TCG. How can this be anything but a good idea?
Anyway. If you were hoping for concrete details, you’re going to be disappointed, but Crypt Studio (which was responsible for the D&D MMO and Neverwinter) CEO Stephen D’Angelo had this to say about the project:
"Everything from the graphics to the gameplay is being targeted for a truly unique AAA game. We're thrilled to provide Magic fans with an opportunity to explore the game's worlds and characters through an entirely new lens. Get ready to embark on a brand new journey."
And otherwise… yeah, we know nothing. Not even a name. So this is just something to keep in the back of your mind, so you won’t be surprised three years from now when suddenly there’s a trailer for this neat new MMO that looks kind of familiar. Here’s hoping it turns out well, and may your mana bank always be bountiful!
…Is that something Magic players say? I don’t know, I’ve played maybe twice.
