Given the circumstances, we wouldnt have expected to hear about a new arcade machine. So you can imagine our surprise when we hear that Minecraft Dungeons is being made into a four-person action RPG arcade cabinet.

Announced in a blog post by developer Mojang, the cabinet will be produced by Play Mechanix and will release in North America. The official title is the Minecraft Dungeons Arcade.

The game itself isnt a carbon copy of the original game on PC and consoles. The controls, for example, have been simplified to movement, melee, dodge, and range attacks. Additionally, the total number of levels have been changed to nine.

One interesting component of the arcade machine is its physical method of retaining save data. Since arcades can't remember save games between sessions (due to the high number of unique players), most simply do not support saving. Minecraft Dungeons Arcade breaks away from this, allowing players to retain their characters gear and progress using a system of cards. Players earn one of sixty unique cards by playing. Each card is associated with a particular item, weapon, etc. When starting a game, each player can scan up to 5 cards to boost their character from the start.

Distribution of the Minecraft Dungeons Arcade machine is limited, but they are currently being sent across North America for testing. Assuming a positive reception, more will be produced and distributed. Mojang assures us that the machines will only be tested in arcades following local health guidelines to ensure pandemic safety.
