EVE Online is the kind of game I absolutely adore in theory but would never play in practice. People have been asking for an MMO where player choice actually matters and can shape the fate of the in-game universe, but that had always been the case in EVE Online, where player corporations use cutthroat tactics and epic space fleets to get wealth, power, and command over an ever-shifting universe. It’s the kind of thing I would really enjoy being a part of… but the barrier of entry is high, I don’t think I’d ever feel comfortable lying, cheating, and scamming my way up the ladder, and I’m too anti-social to get along with the other dynamic personalities I’d likely encounter on the way.
Chances are I’d just spend my days mining for a cheap ship upgrade that would let me mine more efficiently, only to get robbed periodically by marauding pirates.
But I’ve always been interested in the politics and struggles of EVE Online, which is why this new book, which recently finished its kickstarter run with over 765% of what was originally asked, is so exciting for me. Called “A History of the Great Empires of EVE Online”, this narrative hopes to deliver the exciting, interesting player-driven political history of EVE Online since the first day of the game went online.
The author, a freelance Journalist for Wired Andrew Groen, asked for a humble 12,500 USD to print out a thousand copies of the book to ship out. What he got instead was 95,729 dollars, all from preorders alone: there were no bonus for people who gave more, no Stretch Goals, nothing: people gave him all that money just for an early copy of the book.
And I have to say, I wish I had known about it sooner so I could have snagged an electronic version. But that was before I was getting paid to pay attention to the news, so.
“I want to sincerely thank each and every one of you for pledging to this project,” Writes Andrew Groen in the most recent news update “This book will be a much better product thanks to your excitement, passion, and generosity.”
There’s been no announced release date for the book, but I must say, I’m still very excited for it. Even some of the samples written up on the kickstarter page has me intrigued… I just hope it’s accessible for us non-Eve players… or that it at least includes a glossary of terms I might need to know.
