Swatting is when someone calls the police department with false claims of bombs or dangerous hostage situations towards another. This prompts the SWAT team to invade the home, often resulting in damage, harm, and in this case, death.
The origin of the swatting, in this case, has been tied back to a Call of Duty match, where one player, known as Miruhcle, was arguing with another. Miruhcle listed a fake address, claiming it to be his own. This other player, SWAutistic, has a history of threatening to swat others, as well as the one claiming responsibility for a bomb threat that interrupted an MLG Call of Duty event in Dallas earlier this month. The address given by Miruhcle happened to have been the home of Finch.
A now-deleted tweet by Swautistic denies responsibility for Finch's death, though doesn't deny responsibility for making the swatting call.
I DIDNT GET ANYONE KILLED BECAUSE I DIDNT DISCHARGE A WEAPON AND BEING ASWAT MEMBER ISNT MY PROFESSION.
The Los Angeles Police have now arrested 25-year-old Tyler Barriss, who is believed to be the person who made the swatting call that led to Finch's death. He is currently being held in custody with no means for bail.
We will be keeping an eye on his case these coming months.
